My name is Kelli Baker and I am the new Morris Elementary School counselor. I am so excited to be a part of the Morris community. As the elementary counselor, my role includes providing education on character traits, healthy coping skills and strategies to increase social emotional learning. Lessons are provided to each classroom once a week on character traits. Small groups are provided to students referred by their teachers in reference to different areas of social emotional learning that might assist students, such as anger management, respect, following directions and increasing self-esteem. Individual sessions are available to students as needed to provide a safe place to talk. The counseling office is equipped with a variety of tools to provide comfort in the conversation such as fidgets, counseling games, kinetic sand, coping skill crafts, and a variety of coloring activities. In addition to the regularly scheduled activities daily, additional resources are being provided to the Morris Elementary School families such as Coffee with The Counselor and 2 Social Emotional Learning Family Nights planned throughout the school year. Morris schools has also implemented a weekly recognition award called Eagles on The Fly.
Coffee with The Counselor:
Coffee with The Counselor occurs on the second Tuesday morning of each month from 7:45-8:15. During this monthly event, parents can drop their students off and proceed to the elementary playground to enjoy complementary coffee courtesy of our local Coffee Vault community partner, while listening to a quick informational the counselor about tips on different topics our students are experiencing such as anxiety, anger management, bullying, building confidence, homework tips, and internet safety to name a few. Parents will receive handouts during each event to support and provide ideas and strategies to assist at home.
Eagles on The Fly:
Eagles on The Fly are nominations that can be made by any adult within Morris Elementary School from teachers, administrators, support staff, custodians and lunch staff. To receive a nomination, students are caught making outstanding citizenship choices, showing strong integrity of doing the right thing without being asked. Once students are nominated, all names for the week are entered into a drawing. Each Friday morning, 5 student’s names will be announced and awarded during Mrs. A’s morning announcements. Students will receive an awesome certificate to take home showing that they were selected as an Eagle on The Fly as well as a voucher courtesy of our community partner Eagles Corner for this award . Student’s vouchers will be worth a free small fountain drink and candy bar of the student’s choice that will be redeemed at Eagles Corner. Our goal is to continue this award throughout the school year on a weekly basis continuing to encourage outstanding citizenship!
Social Emotional Family Fun Nights:
There will be 2 family fun nights scheduled throughout the school year. The purpose of the night is to provide students and their guardians with an opportunity to learn healthy strategies that can be implemented within the home. The event will provide a rotation of stations parents and students can participate in while learning how to incorporate within the home. All supplies will be provided and the event will be completely free of charge. There will be refreshments as well as many door prizes and drawings for great family fun gifts. The goal of this event is to provide families with healthy ideas and activities to incorporate at home strengthening relationships and building a strong line of communication.
